I would not recommend this movie if you are looking for a historically accurate or emotional story of the Virgen of Guadalupe. This was truly pythonesque: Mary appeared as a painted icon with a real woman's face in the middle. The worst part, however, was the cheesiness of the appearance of Mary. It is also historically inaccurate in that the Spaniards almost never brought their families to their colonies. The subplot between the Spanish daughter of the viceroy and the native leader Temoc distracts from the real story: the birth of Mexican Catholicism. The natives looked more like Europeans than natives (Juan Diego is very light-skinned and his eyes appear to be hazel in color, for example). The movie was over-acted, and the characters were shallow and under-developed. This movie went well beyond even what is acceptable for Mexico's dramatic standards, however.
